Crossing into Uganda

Read the original post and follow Everything Except The Horn's overland adventures on thier website: everything except the horn - Travel blog.

Uganda was definitely the highlight of my trip. I have had so many meetings and adventures it is almost impossible to tell you all about them.SO the border crossing from Rwanda into Uganda was somewhat interesting. I was driving on a nice tar road after travelling up north through the Akagera National Park to the border. We arrived at a boom gate and were informed that the immigration office was 100m back. After sorting out all the exit stamps I crossed over the bridge and hit a little dirt road with a shack. This apparently was the Uganda immigration office. Clearly not many travelers drive through on this road as an hour and a half of arguing about my carnet papers etc they finally stamped passport etc and off we went. Nightfall was close and we still had another 40km to the tar road.

So a quick switch with Justine as I am hopeless at driving at night. We finally made it to the African camp that was on the GPS. A bit dodgy as it was a truck stop and right on the road. Traffic the whole night and Ugandans shouting up at the tent- “Masungu I love you!” At 6am we couldn’t take it anymore and Justine shouted back that we are sleeping and that they must go away!

So in the morning on the road to Kampala and we met up with Jeroen and Casper at the Red Chilli. I was expecting much more from other blogs but it was a place to sleep. Way too many rules for a campsite. Justine had a contact in Kampala and had organized for us to stay with him.

However before we headed over there in the morning we had to make a stop to the hospital as Justine had an insect bite that was not looking very good. After blood tests etc the doctor gave her some antibiotics and off we went.

Ross was very hospitable and took us to watch a local rugby game and a great dinner. I am very thankful for a comfortable bed and a nice clean showerJ It was here in Kampala that Justine decided it was time to head back to South Africa. It was a bit of a shock as I wasn’t expecting her departure so soonL Goodbyes were said in the early hours of the morning. It was great having her on the trip and we had some real fun times!

So off I go to Jinja!
