We recently spoke to the RAC UK about the level of service the company was providing to the overlanding community.

Our discussions with the RAC have been positive, with the RAC launching a new Carnet service and partnering with OverlandSphere to strengthen communications between the RAC and overland travellers.

Recently the RAC had withdrawn the ability to obtain a carnet with security via a Bank Guarantee or a cash deposit, the reasons for this are detailed below in the RAC's official response.

To launch the new service the RAC are offering you the chance to benefit from a 10% saving on your Insurance Indemnity if you require a carnet book before 30th June 2013 by quoting: ‘Drive the World’

Keep any eye out for the monthly updates from the RAC on OverlandSphere.

Official RAC Statement

The RAC has been serving UK motorists for 116 years, helping keep them on the road and championing their interests. A unique service we offer motorists is the issuing of the international vehicle passport - Carnet de Passage – permitting you to temporarily ‘import’ your vehicle into a country avoiding local duties and taxes. We work with adventurous explorers and charity globetrotters as they all traverse the globe with the spirit of the pioneers.

In response to recent feedback the RAC has made a significant investment in its Carnet de Passage service to make it easier and faster to apply for your documents and to let you get on with planning your epic journey. We are also be boosting our team to improve our service levels and to offer you the advice and assistance you need.

As on average only 4% Carnets issued each year were secured by a Bank Guarantee we felt it was no longer economical for us to offer this option. In addition, this does not give you the same level of security that an Insurance Indemnity option affords. While we recognise that this may be a disappointment for those who have chosen this option in the past it was a necessary change to reduce risk and to allow us to invest in better systems and a bigger team to improve efficiency and service.

To launch the new service we are offering you the chance to benefit from a 10% saving on your Insurance Indemnity if you require a carnet book before 30th June 2013 by quoting: ‘Drive the World’
